Instead of an orphanage for highly gifted children to become L‘s successors, Wammy‘s is a special boarding school for "twice exceptional“ children. They specialise in the education of intellectually gifted children with learning difficulties that are not able to fully unfold their capacities in a traditional school environment due to mental disorders such as Autism or ADHD. It‘s a really small school, and probably the only one of this kind in the whole UK, with a maximum capacity of 60 students and approx. 20 teachers.
Wammy‘s has kids from all walks of life from all kinds of different ethnicities and backgrounds. Multilingualism is absolutely common there. Many have difficult family relationships and have had a troublesome life.
Wammy‘s House is located in Winchester in the very south of the UK. Wammy’s has a super nostalgic, melancholic vibe. Lots of trauma, many tears. Kyrie eleison.
School motto: “Sub eum mortem cum scientiae vincemus” (Under him we shall conquer death with knowledge), it’s on the gate, the front door of the dorm house and in the canteen. And everyone interprets it the “him” as god being a protective figure but Mello, Near, and I’m sure Beyond has the same connection, interprets the “him” as L.
Wammy’s has nooks and crannies throughout that kids enjoys spending time in, away from the noise and distractions of the other kids where they can read or study or fidget with games in peace without prying eyes on them. The little spaces aren’t always hidden, maybe rooms no one frequents or corners of the library usually unused, there’s even an entrance to the attic that isn’t blocked off that they’ve found.
There’s a graveyard on site? They moved the graveyard a bit outwards - Old directors would be buried there. Portraits of old directors hang in the halls of dorm house? school house?
The gym is not on the campus but a bit outside. They gotta walk there a couple of minutes.
What do they eat there? Typical british foods like beans & toast? Fish & chips? Biscuits! And there’s lots of tea. How stereotypical haha and the food sucks. I’m sure Mello and Matt have a usual spot in the canteen from where they can spy on other people.
Apple crumble and custard in the canteen in autumn!
As it’s commonplace for british schools, they have an on ground chapel at Wammy’s.
In the dorm house I imagine a room with a pulpit that they use as a room for Sunday school and maybe there's an old dusty pipe organ somewhere that sounds weird when you play it.
Beyond hat mal die chapel in Brand gesetzt und es wurde ihm nie nachgewiesen, aber alle Wammykinder sind sich sicher, dass ers war. Der hat auch schon so einigen Scheiß in die Bänke dort geritzt.
More modern looking - was built after Quillsh bought the campus. Schulgebäude mit Klassenzimmern etc drinne. Canteen
There are portraits of former directors hanging in the halls.
2 libraries - one normal one with Twilight and shit and computers and one fancy one with restricted access with donated books [Ren]
Zweistöckiges altes umgebautes Gebäude mit Buntglasfenstern. Floors are seperated by gender.
The wooden floors are all creaking super loudly-
The main building is a rennovated monastery building or at least hevily resembles one with a cross-shaped OR L-shaped layout, stained-glass windows and being east-faced. The sound of large churchbells ringing is pretty much the main theme of Wammy‘s. There are multiple churches all around the area that ring their bells throughout the day and are prominently heard. They can be quite loud at times. There is a bell on the main building of Wammy‘s too but it sounds rather lame and is rarely used. They had a bigger bell once but it’s been destroyed by an aerial bomb during WW2.
There are grotesques (Neidköpfe) on the facade of the dorm house. And in autumn and winter there’s often thick fog on the campus, making everything a little more unsettling than it already is. And the dorm house is a bit run down and pieces of the grotesques are missing. [Jupiter]
WHATWHATWHATWHAT IF—- this is a boarding school with some name whatever and they have houses, like british boardings school do and they names their houses after famous inventors AND THE SMART KIDS ARE IN WAMMY’S HOUSE CAUSE QUILSH IS A FAMOUS INVENTOR?!
Most of the kids at Wammy’s have some behavioural issues before registering there, which is why they get discovered and tested in the first place. They’re often bored in regular classes. ”While the other kids read chapter 2, I was reading chapter 7 and thought “what do the other not understand just now??””
Some real life reference on how to interpret IQ values In most tests, 100 is the average value with a +/- 15 counting as an average IQ. So, most people (about 70%) fall into the range of 85-115. Everything up to 130 counts as “gifted”, everything above 130 counts as “highly gifted”. Though I think it’s important to note that IQ tests are only a relatively vague and unreliable indicator of someones intelligence and at best, only show a small fraction of the truth. Defining intelligence as such is already pretty difficult - to make a reliable system to measure it is nearly impossible. Still, in most real schools for highly gifted people, an IQ test is required for registration, so I went that route. And it gives us a bit of context, of how powerful these characters are.
A kid has to take a standard IQ-Test with a result of 130+ to get accepted into Wammy‘s. Should a kid get a result of 150+ at the standard test, the authorities are instructed to contact "Justus“. He will go pay a visit to meet the kid under the pretence of an interview for a scholarship. Instead, he conducts an additional special assignment with the kid, which is a variation of real life cases L has solved in the past to see their deductive skills in action. This is usually in november or december, a few months after the school year started (early september) and the kid had a chance to settle in the new environment. This way he also gets a chance to ask the teachers about the personality of the kid so he has at least a baseline of understaning who he will be dealing with. That‘s when he actually interacts with some of the kids, meaning he met Near, Matt and Mello at least once in person but without telling them or even giving them a hint of him being L. That‘s not something they need to know.
