Mello and Matt somehow get out of the Takada kidnapping alive. That same night or the morning after, either they contact Near or Near contacts them (probably over Halle), they meet at SPK HQ once more and he makes Mello an offer: Mello's assistance and information on the Kira case in exchange for immunity for Mello after the Kira case. Cause remember: the guy is facing death penalty if he ever gets caught. Mello, again, loses his temper, thinks it's a trap etc. and storms off.

"Do you know where you can stick your offer?"

"No, where?"

On the way home, cooling down a little, Mello reevaluates. He is thinking about accepting Near's offer, but for Matt instead of him. The question is: What can Matt be prosecuted for? Sure, kidnapping Takada, drug deals, .... But I don't think it's enough for the death penalty. But Mello overthinks the whole thing in his head and by the time he gets home, he's mentally already been to Matt's funeral.

Upon arriving at their hideout, he lets Matt in on Near’s deal.

"...and you said “yes”, of course."

"..."

"MELLO, YOU SAID “YES”, RIGHT?"

"I said I'd think about it"

"Are you a bloody fucking idiot??? You call Near right now and tell him you accept!!"

Matt grabs one of their phones, Mello snaps it out of his hand "Now would you just wait a damn second?! Near only made the offer for one person! "

"Yeah so??"

Mello throws him a look "..."

"...no. No no no, forget it."
