### ABOUT
**Near** is the younger of L's two successors, raised in Wammy's House—Watari's orphanage for gifted children in Winchester, England. After L's death, Near begins his investigation of the Kira case, gathering evidence over a period of four years. Near takes his findings to the President of the United States and reveals himself to be the true successor of L. Soon after, Near becomes the head of the Special Provision for Kira and continues the hunt for Kira. After making contact with "L" (Light Yagami), Near begins to suspect that he is also Kira.

- Post-canon Near plays **Minecraft**. Matt as well. Hell, even Mello plays Minecraft at some point.
- Near **stims** a lot. He‘s always keeping his hands busy - twirling hair, stacking or picking apart things. He visually stims by looking at multiple screens at the same time, turning on and off lights, staring at moving objects. He would 100% have fidget spinners around at all times, if they were a thing in 2009. He likes the pressure when he crouches.
- It takes Near ages to eat meals, as he sorts and arranges his food on his plate to perfection before he even starts eating.
- Has **misophonia** - can‘t stand the sound of other people chewing. Is extremely picky - likes soft textures and unseasoned food, like plain rice.
- People tend to see Near as this poor gentle fragile child and treat him with kid gloves. Truth is, this guy can annihilate you with words if he wants to. He‘s not innocent in any way, just as snarky as Matt and every bit as cruel as Mello. Near hat genauso viel kriminelle Energie wie Mello, nur handelt er bewusst dagegen, weil er einen starken moralischen Kompass hat. Mello nicht. What sets them apart are Nears high morals and his endeavour for constructive coexistence instead of egoistic self-fulfillment.
- He is **petulant** and difficult to deal with
- Near has always been a **very small adult** in his mannerisms. Selbst in seinen WIRKLICH jungen Jahren, so mit weiß ich nicht, 5-6 Jahren konntest du mit dem sinnvolle, erwachsene Konversationen führen. Über keine Ahnung, Aktien. Sehr grundlegend zwar, aber das ging. However, despite his childish interests and activities, he seems to be the most mature in realistic compared to Light, L, and Mello, when it comes to his ideals, with a very pragmatic point of view on justice, being an **existentialist**.

- Near has **problems recognising, interpreting and dealing with others and his own emotions**. Reading the room is one of his big weaknesses. For example, I imagine him chuckling in heartbreaking situations - Alison (his sister) crying to mom about her troubles and Near laughing. Think of it like this: Near had to learn with pictures and descriptions what facial expression means which emotion a person is feeling and how to interpret it, how to react etc.. Pretty much like kids in school learn how to read and write, Near has to learn to be human in a way, which is super weird to think about. Young Near certainly cared about what others think of him but I think he quickly resigned when he noticed that human interaction often doesn’t follow strict logical rules and he felt like he couldn’t get behind that. Maybe it’s a coping mechanism to pretend he doesn’t care about what others think of him but deep down, I think he still does.
- Near started speaking at only a few months and taught himself how to read before school or even kindergarden. It‘s a bit like Near was born and already had so many questions that he needed to figure out a way to ask all of them as quickly as possible. He got quieter over time and quickly had a phase where he only spoke when necessary and often didn‘t even react when spoken to. Even as a little kid, Near always appeared very mature, like a small adult. His mannerisms are so unusual, it‘s almost a little uncanny.

- Wenn alles zu viel wird, schließt sich Near in super small spaces ein.
- Near is **highly susceptile to bright lights**, especially to sunlight, and is prone to sunburns. He wears sunglasses and uses an umbrella if it‘s unavoidable to go outside. At Wammy‘s, he was deliberately put in a north-facing room due to this condition, as the sun will never shine directly in there. As if his autism and cognitive skills weren‘t seperating him from other people enough, his strange appearance makes him feel isolated and alienated even more.
- Near’s **autism** was discovered pretty early. He has immense trouble reading other peoples facial expression and interpreting emotional responses. Same goes for expressing his own emotions. eye contact makes him feel really uneasy. He‘s overstimulated super quickly and feels overwhelmed by loud noises, bright lights and crowds. If things get to be a lot, he has melt- or shutdowns because there‘s no other way of handling things for him at the time. Meltdowns were more common as a kid, shutdowns more common as a teen/adult. Near can‘t make friends easily. It‘s not that he doesn‘t want any, he just can‘t make social connections with anybody properly. It‘s like everybody is talking in a secret language he is unable to understand. The loneliness sometimes wears down heavily on Near.
It took a lot of time and effort for Near to be the way we see him in canon. We always see Mello as the tragic hard-working character and that may be true for his intellectual abilities and achievements but what we don‘t see is Nears hard work to function as a human. He appears almost robotic and cold most of the time but we tend to forget that this guy has feelings and needs just like everybody else - he‘s just unable to express these things in a way a neurotypical person would.
Near doesn’t understand the purpose of small talk.

“Wir haben halt Autismus testen lassen, und dann wollten wir die Hochbegabung auch direkt mittesten lassen. Das Ergebnis war, dass ich hochbegabt bin. Zu meinem Autismus kommt noch die Hochbegabung dazu. Asperger-Autismus ist eine Behinderung und es ist ehm halt unter anderem eine sozial-emotionale Störung. Das heißt, dass die Kommunikation mit anderen dann nicht so gut klappt und dass ich Konflikte zum Beispiel nicht so gut lösen kann.
Gruppenarbeit ist fürchterlich. Das ist zu viel, zu wuselig, zu laut. Ich höre das Ticken der Uhr genauso laut wie den Lehrer.
Young Near nimmt seinen Autismus ein paar Mal zu oft als Begründung für unerklärliches Verhalten (Not-Aus-Knopf-Drücken im Unterricht) und die anderen flamen ihn dafür “Hää das liegt doch jetzt wohl nicht an deinem Autismus??”
Ich erkenn dann zum Beispiel nicht, wenn jemand traurig ist. Aber die anderen erkennen das bei mir dann auch nicht.
Mich macht das oft traurig, dass ich oft das Gefühl habe, dass mich niemand versteht.”

### NEAR’S LOVE LIFE / SEXUALITY
Near is **aromantic** and regarding his sexual preferences, I think **he likes pleasure** and it ends at that. Sometimes that’s a dick in the ass and sometimes that’s eating pussy.
This whole "Near is just a little innocent little lamb" thing has bothered me since forever. The guy is 17/18 in canon. Yeah, he's got "childish" interests with toys and shit but that's about it?? He looks like a kid in canon but that's on O&O. I always try to draw him his actual age, so he looks more like an awkward late teen. He's got regular teen problems and newfound desires and needs too but is unable to communicate his problems with other people productively and the more I think about this, the sadder Near gets, somehow.
