This is an extensive DEATH NOTE Alternative Universe, where Wammy’s is a boarding school, not an orphanage. The kids have families and actual lives outside the canon plot of Death Note. I try to make everything in canon make more sense. Heavy emphasis on Mello and Matt’s side of the story. The difference between 2.0 and 2.1 is that Matt and Mello become a romantic couple in 2.1, survive the Takada kidnapping and are still kickin’ today. 2.0 is the base universe setup where they’re just friends. Changed some names, some dates and called bullshit on some minor canon things. Have fun! ♥

It's a modern real world setting with minor supernatural elements. The original story takes place from 2004-2010 but I expanded it to recent time.

STORY

Full timeline

1989-1998

Matt, Mello and Near are living with their families with all of them having their troubles with public schools until the parents discover their kid’s giftedness and decide to put them in a specialised boarding school - Wammy’s House.

1998-2004

Near and Matt arrive at Wammy’s at the same time in September 1998. Mello arrives a year later and meets Matt, as he’s his new roommate. Matt and Mello befriend, Mello and Near befiend.

Late 2003 in Japan, Light picks up the Death Note and the first canon arc begins. Light starts killing criminals as Kira, L starts investigating, the case gets worldwide attention and media coverage. The kids at Wammy’s, mainly Near and Mello, are invested and are fiercely up-to-date. L and Kira play a longterm cat-and-mouse game, ending in L’s death, late 2004. Roger, principle of Wammy’s, informs Mello and Near about L’s passing and tried to get one of them to take over L’s role. Near takes the job, while Mello runs away from Wammy’s House over night with Matt, wanting to solve the case his own way and before Near. The families of the Wammy’s kids are put in a witness protection programme.

2004-2008

Mello and Matt tour through Europe for a while trying to get to Japan with Near and the authorities trying to chase them down. They illegally travel to the east coast of the US and hitchhike their way to the westcoast. Matt becomes sick, they’re out of money they stole from Roger and are forced to stay in California, at least temporarily.

They move in together in Los Angeles and start sidequesting, trying to get by somehow. They even try to work as honest private investigators for a while but it isn’t working very well.

Mello contemplates resorting to illegal and criminal methods to solve the case and starts finding his way into one of California’s notorious gangs. Mello presents Rod Ross, boss of that one notorious gang, the head of a rivaling mob boss and earns himself membership in Rod’s gang.

2008-2009

The SPK is founded with Near being the lead investigator. Mafia/Mello plants a spy in the SPK, giving him information about the case and Near’s plans. Mello learns about the Death Note.

The canon second arc begins with Mafia/Mello abducting Takimura and blackmailing the Task Force for a Death Note. Mafia/Mello abduct Sayu, same game. Mafia/Mello are now in possession of a Death Note. Mafia/Mello run tests with it and kill most of the SPK with it. The SPK gets officially shut down. Shidoh shows up at the mafia HQ. Mafia/Mello run tests with him. The Task Force raids one of the mafia HQs, kill all of the present members except Mello, Mello blows up the base at gunpoint. Matt saves a severely wounded Mello from the rubble.

2009-2010

While Mello’s wounds are healing, he visits Near in New York. The SPK building gets raided by Demegawa. Mello and Matt start following Misa and Mogi. Everybody travels independantly to Japan. Matt and Mello hop love hotels while trying to surveil SPK, Takada, Task Force. Halle starts working as Takada’s bodyguard. SPK starts surveilling Mikami. Near identifies Mikami as the current Kira. Near sets a date for a final confrontation with the Task Force, icl. Light to confront Kira. Matt and Mello kidnap Takada leading to her death and Matt and Mello surviving. Near and Mello make a deal: Mello’s compliance for his immunity. Near+ confront Light+, uncovering Light being Kira, Light dying at the scene and Mikami being arrested. The remaining Task Force, SPK and Matt and Mello have a recap at SPK HQ. Matt and Mello are advised to stay at SPK HQ until Near can make his deal with Mello happen.

2010-recent

As part of Near’s deal, Mello has to spent some time in prison. Matt and Near move in together during Mello’s time away.

After Mello’s release, Matt and Mello reunite with their families and move back to the UK. They both struggle to find their way into a somewhat “normal” life after all that happened.

They get married somewhen in the late 2010’s.
